Did Napoleon End The Revolution

Although it appeared that Napoleon capitalized on the progress made by the people responsible for the French Revolution and took advantage of the internal sociopolitical struggles, it cannot be denied that when he gained power and authority, he effectively ended the upheaval by guaranteeing a more unwavering brand of governance.

The Consulate may be considered the event that marked the end of the French Revolution because it was, technically, a military coup rather than a movement pushed along by the however theoretical “will of the people,” unlike the earlier revolution. Although power was vested in three consuls, Napoleon soon began to take charge.

The coalition invaded France and captured Paris, forcing Napoleon to abdicate in April 1814. Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba, between Corsica and Italy. In France, the Bourbons were restored to power. However, Napoleon escaped from Elba in February 1815 and took control of France, “without spilling a drop of blood” as he wished.
