It was 51 years ago today (February 18th, 1969) that Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash first teamed up to record an album of duets in Nashville.

Johnston had hoped the two would record an entire album together, and there was a good cause too. Cash and Dylan recorded 15 songs together for the Nashville sessions, but would only end up keeping one of those tracks, Girl From The North Country.

For the sake of completion, the set also has Dylan and Cash singing “I Threw It All Away,” “Living the Blues,” and “Girl From the North Country” from The Johnny Cash Show in June 1969 along with “Ring of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blues” that Dylan sang on his own during the Self Portrait sessions on May 3rd, 1969.

In plain terms, Johnny was and is the North Star; you could guide your ship by him — the greatest of the greats then and now. I first met him in ’62 or ’63 and saw him a lot in those years. Not so much recently, but in some kind of way he was with me more than people I see every day.

Over the past 45 years he’s shared credit with Tom Petty, Rick Danko, Sam Shepard, Carole Bayer Sager and even Gene Simmons and Michael Bolton. Here are the stories behind five of those collaborations.
