Did Everton Ever Wear Red

Records of Everton’s early change colours are sparse but we do have newspaper accounts of two interesting alternatives used in 1890. Blue shirts were worn in 1892-93 when their first choice was red. After this they probably had a spare set of white shirts to comply with a new Football League rule.

Every Liverpool player is wearing red shirt, red shorts and red socks … and the date is December 16, 1964. It has long since passed into Anfield folklore that Bill Shankly’s magnificent side of 1964 first wore all-red against Anderlecht on November 25. It is the 54th anniversary of that famous milestone this week. Except they didn’t.

For the visit of Wolves on February 13th it was red shirts, white shorts and white socks, as it was for every league match at Anfield throughout January, February and March. Perhaps league rules forbade a strip switch mid-season.

Led managerially by former player Howard Kendall, Everton enjoyed about as much success as they have ever had, winning trophies domestically and internationally. The 1984-85 season lives on warmly in the memory of many Evertonians, during which the side won Europe and the League.
