Did Dodge Make An El Camino

Although Chevy produced a sedan with a truck bed in 1936, the car based truck didn’t catch on until Ford unveiled the Ford Ranchero in 1957. In an effort to compete in this largely unexplored class of car, General Motors created the El Camino.

It was about this time that Chrysler rolled out a competitor. The Chrysler competitors to the El Camino and the Ranchero were called the Plymouth Scamp and the Dodge Rampage, and I bet that you’ve never seen one if you were born after 1990. This is for two reasons.

The 1978 through 1987 El Caminos were produced in four trim levels: Classic, Black Knight (1978)/Royal Knight (1979–83), Conquista and Super Sport, and shared chassis components with the Chevrolet Malibu. Chevrolet 90° V6 and Buick V6 engines were used for the first time.
