Could mammoths still be alive? There’s still plenty of evidence that shows the animals roamed the Earth. Mammoths lived on every continent except for Australia and South America. Some mammoth populations survived the end of the last Ice Age, and lived longer than anywhere else. Some mammoths lived in Alaska and Siberia, but were wiped out elsewhere.
Scientists are studying mammoth genes to see if they can revive the ancient mammoth. Geneticist George M. Church, who is leading the Harvard Woolly Mammoth Revival, says they could have survived in a temperate rainforest. But mammoths probably couldn’t make the journey to the equator, so it’s unlikely they survived. However, recent research suggests that mammoths were alive on the American mainland thousands of years ago.
Genetic engineering has already made it possible to edit DNA and read the genome. The goal is to create an animal that is similar to an extinct mammoth, and with the help of genetic engineering, a living mammoth can be created. This process is known as de-extinction, and it could lead to a new species that has similar traits as the extinct mammoth. And if it works, it could benefit both humanity and the environment.
The Asian elephant is the closest living relative of the woolly mammoth. Genetic engineering could create an “elemoth” by editing the DNA of an elephant. But scientists would also need a mother elephant to carry the embryo. Sadly, these species are now critically endangered. Ultimately, researchers hope to produce an artificial womb to clone mammoths. In the meantime, experiments on mice are underway. They are still far from a finished product and scaling up to a full-sized mammoth is expected to take at least another decade.
