These can be viewed in the building’s Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom.

There is one line of text along the bottom edge on the back of the Declaration. It reads, “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776,” This docket (identifying label) was visible when the document was rolled up for storage. View in National Archives Catalog

We didn’t always understand this, and for a long time, the Declaration of Independence was kept near a window in the Patent Office Building. Sunlight from the window would creep in each day, and over many years this caused the ink on this document to fade, which is why it’s much more difficult to read today than it was in the past.
