Can The Government Give Money To Religious Schools

The United States Supreme Court has said that faith-based organizations may not use direct government support to support “inherently religious” activities. Basically, it means you cannot use any part of a direct Federal grant to fund religious worship, instruction, or proselytization.

The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that state programs providing money for public school tuition cannot exclude schools that offer religious instruction. The decision relaxed long-standing restrictions on using taxpayer money to pay for religious education, further lowering the wall of separation between church and state.

Basically, it means you cannot use any part of a direct Federal grant to fund religious worship, instruction, or proselytization. Instead, organizations may use government money only to support the non-religious social services that they provide.

The court’s holding is restricted to Missouri’s decision to treat private religious schools differently from private non-religious schools in this particular program. The decision does not require states to fund religious schools.
