Can My Dog Have A Heart Attack From Fireworks

A Greater Manchester rescue centre has called for fireworks to be banned after revealing they caused one of their dogs to have a fatal heart attack. The RSPCA estimates 45% of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks but it can seriously affect some animals who are predisposed to be nervous.

If you’re anxious or upset by environmental stresses, it will only cause more anxiety for your dog. As such, it’s best to always stay as calm as possible during fireworks, thunderstorms, and other loud noises in order to comfort and soothe your canine companion. Additionally, experts recommend taking your dog on a long walk before fireworks begin.

A heart attack, or “myocardial infarction,” happens when blood is blocked from reaching the heart muscle (myocardium). Deprived of oxygen and nutrients, the heart muscle dies and the affected heart chamber can no longer effectively pump blood through the body. Canine heart attacks have been seen in all breeds and are very rare.

RSPCA data suggests that over 60% of dogs show marked signs of distress when exposed to firework displays, even outside the home. Applied to the UK canine population, that suggests that there are at least five and a half million dogs that are subjected to unnecessary fear and distress every year.
