While it is possible to paint straight over gloss, we do not recommend this. The shiny surface of the gloss doesn’t provide good adhesion for whatever paint you use over the top of gloss. The new paint will therefore chip easily and won’t look good for long.
If door is already glossed, sand down to create a key, then apply emulsion. However should you not like it, the last thing you do is to repaint over the new emulsion paint. You will need to wait a good few weeks, sand again then paint over in gloss.
Painting emulsion over gloss will result in one of two things without proper preparation: The emulsion paint won’t stick and will drip. That’s not good. The emulsion paint will stick, but not very well. This will result in odd textures and weird patches that don’t match the rest of the paintjob.
As second method would be to clean all the surfaces with sugar soap to ensure the area is clean and grease free. You can then use a Super Grip primer on the surfaces and allow to fully dry. As above, a good sand to the surface and emulsion will key to the gloss or another option is to use zinsser bin as undercoat.
