On his first day in this country Kurosawa, who does not speak English, saw the Sidney Lumet film “Prince of the City,” which he enjoyed very much. Later, at a party at director William Friedkin’s apartment, Kurosawa met and talked with Lumet.

He believed his years as an assistant director were invaluable. In Japanese cinema at that time, assistant directors dabbled in virtually every aspect of film production and Kurosawa, among other things, learned all about editing, set-decorating, costume-design and working with actors.

After the rebooting of his career, Kurosawa made films like Kagemusha and Ran. The emotion, the composition, the framing, and the camera movement was perfection in film after film after film throughout his over 50 years crafting films. I’ve studied almost everyone of his films I could get my hands on.
